Plastering, Level 2 Apprenticeship

The construction sector is vital in contributing to the national economy and in providing the essential infrastructure to support other sectors. In light of the current economic climate it is more essential than ever to gain skills and qualifications in this area, to improve future prospects and job progression. The role of the Plasterer is to prepare the surfaces of a structure and apply a hard smooth finish to these surfaces. This may be in a variety of materials and techniques e.g. cement render, gypsum plaster, lime render and plaster and floor screed.

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Applicants must be employed in the construction industry as an apprentice plasterer, a keen interest in the subject area is also required.

Course Content:

You will learn how to:

  • Apply plastering materials to interiors
  • Produce external render finishes
  • Fix dry lining and plasterboards to interiors
  • Lay sand and cement screeds
  • Apply plastering materials to external backgrounds

For those students who are not exempt there is a requirement to complete Functional Skills qualifications alongside mainstream study. In addition to these course requirements you will need to undertake an NVQ which is assessed in the workplace and evidence via a portfolio that you will be required to maintain.

Assessment:

Plastering will be marked through set practical tasks. Underpinning knowledge is assessed via online exams. An assessor will visit you on site at regular intervals to make judgments on your progress and skills development whilst supporting you by setting targets and goals.

Costs:

The majority of the training costs delivered by the College for Apprenticeships is funded. There is a required employer contribution towards this as follows:

  • Apprentices aged 16 – 18 = Free
  • Apprentices aged 19+ = Employer contribution of £500

Employers must pay Apprentices a wage (minimum of £2.73 per hour). Apprenticeships at Truro and Penwith College are only available to businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

Method of teaching:

This is a practical and theoretically based course using a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, lectures and presentations. You will work on your own, in pairs and small groups practising skills and techniques within a realistic working environment.

Progression:

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Plastering which requires further study.
