CLEARING: THE BASICS
Clearing helps people find vacancies on higher education courses after the main application period has finished on 30 June. It continues until the beginning of the academic year, with applications being accepted up to 19 September 2009. Applications received after 30 June are entered directly into Clearing. Those who have completed an application but have not gained a place for the current year, either by receiving no offers, declining all offers or not meeting their conditions, are also eligible for Electronic Clearing.

KEEPING TRACK
On A-level result day, 20 August 2009, (5 August 2008 for Scottish results), students awaiting examination results will be able to check the status of their application using the UCAS Track facility. Track provides students with either confirmation of a place or their Clearing details, enabling them to immediately approach institutions with vacancies. Students will require their UCAS username, password and application number to use Track.

Please note that universities and colleges may decide to accept an applicant with lower grades than originally requested. It is therefore particularly important to use UCAS Track to check status.

VIEWING VACANCIES
Courses that have vacancies will be listed in The Independent, The Independent on Sunday and the Belfast Telegraph and on the UCAS website from the day that A-level results are published.

Applicants can search for courses by subject, by university or by region and then contact the institution direct to discuss their suitability for the course. Applicants must have their Clearing number available and details of any examination results which will not be on their UCAS form. Just as applicants apply direct to an institution, so the institution replies direct to the applicant. If offered a place, the applicant will need to add the institution and course codes to their application. UCAS is notified by the institution and subsequently sends the applicant confirmation of the place. Applicants are advised not to contact institutions until they have their examination results and must consult the institution and be offered a place before entering course details on their Clearing application.
