What the students say

Hannah Penfound-Marks studies A Level Economics, English Literature, French, History and Spanish.

Her previous School was The Lady Elizabeth School in Alicante, Spain

Her thoughts...
"I like the encouragement you are given to achieve and reach your full academic potential.
The College also has a really friendly atmosphere".

Sara-Jane Lee studies A Level English Language and Literature, Drama, German and Psychology

Her previous School was the Stover School in Newton Abbot.

Her thoughts...
"I love the relaxed atmosphere at Truro College and the way that we are all responsible for achieving the best results we can.
I made the decision to move away from Plymouth and live by myself so that I could come to the College.
I’m so glad I made the move - all my lecturers have been incredibly supportive".

Henry Minns studies A Level Art and Design - Graphics, English Language and Literature, Mathematics and Physics

His previous School was Penryn College

His thoughts...

Application Process:

Complete an application form. Application forms are available in schools in Cornwall or may be obtained by telephoning the College. They are also available to download from our website:
www.trurocollege.ac.uk/downloads

The form asks for information about you and also asks you to state which course you would like to study at the College. You will see that you may apply for more than one course if you are uncertain as to the best way forward.

Return the form
Return the form through your school or directly to Kathy Jones, Administration Manager / FE Admissions, Truro College, College Road, Truro, Cornwall TR1 3XX.

You will be invited to attend an interview
When we receive your application form an interview will be arranged with a member of staff. The purpose of the interview is to find out more about you and for you to find out more about the College and the courses in which you are interested. Usually by the end of the interview a way forward will be agreed. If the course for which you have applied is not appropriate further interviews may be arranged. At your interview, further information about the course and the College will be given.
Most full-time students at the College, other than Higher Education, are aged between 16 and 19 years. Increasing numbers of mature students are seeking to return to full-time education and we welcome their applications. Each application will be treated individually.

You will be offered a course, if appropriate
If you are taking GCSE examinations in the summer you will be asked to let us know your results. We will tell you how to do this in a letter which we will send you in towards the end of July. At the end of August we will have further discussions if necessary.

September:
Join Truro College

Induction Days
Just before the term starts you will be invited to the College to receive your timetable and to meet staff and other students so that on the first day of term your course may begin smoothly. A letter in July will inform you of the day and time set for your induction.

Interview Process:

At interview you will receive a card offering you a place on a course. Please return this acceptance card, either by signing and handing it back to your interviewer, handing it in to Mylor Reception or returning it by post within two weeks, to have your details included on our provisional list of next year’s students. If you change your mind after interview please let us know of your new plans without delay.

Contact After Interview
You will receive two letters after interview, one in May and one in July. The letter at the end of July will detail what to do when you receive your GCSE results. This will involve phoning the College either on the day you receive your results or the day after. The letter will explain details of when and where to phone.

The College Day:

The College day for full-time students will usually last from 9.15am to 4.15pm.

Students will have more private study time than is the case with pupils in school.
Full-time students can normally expect a minimum of 17 hours per week in classroom-based learning.
All courses, however, will require a commitment of at least 15 additional hours of private study, both at College and at home.
Some students will finish earlier than 4.15pm on some days and a small number of students may choose to include study at an evening class within their programme.

Learning Support and Welfare:

The Study Centres are a learning resource provided for all students and offering support in Mathematics, IT, Communications, Study Skills and Modern languages.
The Study Centre environment removes classroom restrictions and constraints enabling you to study at a pace and in a style appropriate to your needs. Study Centres are staffed by specialists in each discipline mentioned and you can either drop-in and work or arrange an individual learning plan with the staff. These are friendly, comfortable places to improve your skills. If you have received help in the past please let us know so that we can continue to provide help and support with your learning.

If there are any issues that you feel you need advice and support with, such as anxiety, relationships or drugs and alcohol you can see the Personal Adviser who is trained in welfare support. The Personal Adviser can also advise on benefits, help with housing matters or assist in finding accommodation from the College Accommodation List. A Clinic, run by a team of health professionals during lunchtimes. Personal Tutors will also support you in any of these matters.

Some students, whilst studying, may experience emotional and personal issues that would benefit from sharing with a trained counsellor. Truro College offers a completely confidential counselling service which is free of charge to students and an appointment can be made in various ways.

Progress Evenings / Open Events

Progress Evenings provide the opportunity to make appointments with those lecturers who teach your son or daughter, to discuss progress on their chosen courses at Truro College. We value the opportunity to meet with you and your sons or daughters on a regular basis in order that they may achieve the very best results to help their progression in the future.

You are, of course, encouraged to contact your son or daughter's tutor or Programme Team Leader should you have any concerns at any stage. If you want to discuss any issue with a senior colleague or the Principal, please contact us.

Thursday 13 May 2010 Open Evening (5.00 pm to 8.00 pm)

Each progress evening will be preceded by a report which your son or daughter will bring home. An appointment system operates for these evenings when your son or daughter can make appointments on your behalf. We encourage you to attend with your son or daughter although if you prefer to attend on your own you are most welcome.

The achievements of students at the College have often been outstanding. Last year we were pleased to be the first college in the country to be awarded 'Designated Outstanding' status by Ofsted. This year our students achieved record results which resulted in high places in national league tables. We are determined to maintain our focus on helping students achieve and we believe these meetings can be a real help in this effort.

I would also like to draw your attention to a page on our website for your interest - we will post Progress Evening dates, student bulletin events and other information for your interest and attention.
