Introduction:

This degree is offered on a full and part time basis. The Modules offered, whether on the Full Time or Part Time routes, are delivered using a variety of teaching styles. Students are taught by lecturers and by practitioners who currently are employed in the sector enabling them to benefit from both up to date research based theory and current best practices.

On the Full time course the first year comprises of mainly taught Modules. Throughout the year students develop study skills which are related to the type of assignments they do and are engaged with Work Based Learning. Visits are arranged throughout the year to local, regional and national institutions. The second year has two major pieces of personal study which last throughout the year (culminating in the final term).

The Part Time course will be delivered flexibly from year to year in order to meet the needs of the majority of the student cohort for example through attendance at College one day a week.

The Libraries, Museums and Archives degree is assessed through coursework. Depending on the module this could take the form of written assignments, presentations, portfolios or written reports.

    The Future:

The course will provide a firm basis for further study in a number of disciplines including educational studies. Progression is available onto the BA (Hons) Education and Training at Truro and Penwith College, the University of Plymouth and Cornwall College.

    Features:

This foundation degree offers students an understanding of the economic, cultural and political context of information services in the Twenty-first century. In addition to providing opportunities to study about the wider issues students will, if they choose, be able to develop a focus based on one or more specialist areas through the degree such as industrial museums or university libraries.

Students will also be encouraged to develop the skills needed in the work place and this will be underpinned by the use of reflective practice models in line with professional expectations.

    Header Notes:

The Foundation Degree (Fd) has been in existence since September 2001 and is a new Higher Education qualification which aims to bridge the gap between education and employment. Each course is designed to maximise the benefits to both students and prospective employers with work based elements within the course structure, which can lead straight into employment or into the final year of a related Degree course.
