Paul Haywood (Saxophone)

I have been living in Cornwall since 1990. I completed my Jazz Degree in 2002 and have been teaching saxophone privately since I was 18.
I started teaching on the Jazz Course in Oct 2006 and am really enjoying passing on the knowledge of jazz playing and improvisation that I’ve gained over the years.
I’ve received tuition from Paul Carter, Larry Johns, Yanis Steprans, Viv Rodd, Raphael Ravenscroft and Butch Thomas.

I’ve been gigging locally and nationally since I was 15, playing all styles of music (rock, soul, funk, disco) but predominately jazz.
I’ve had the opportunity to play and/or gig with greats such as Steve Waterman, Tim Whitehead, Jim Mullen, Butch Thomas, Raphael Ravenscroft and Viv Rodd. Also my local heroes such as Pete ‘Kubryk’ Townsend, Damian Rodd, Terry Rodd and Robert Anthony.

I love playing Bebop, Modern Jazz, Nu-Jazz and Fusion.
My saxophone heroes from back in the old days include players like Coltrane, Rollins, Shorter and Tubby Hayes on Tenor and Charlie “Bird” Parker, Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Stitt on Alto.
My modern day favourites include the late and great Michael Brecker, Bob Berg, Jerry Bergonzi, Courtney Pine and Joshua Redman on Tenor and Kenny Garrett, Maceo Parker, Soweto Kinch and Stephano di Battista on Alto.

Learning Jazz is a journey, which has no end, no final destination. There is always something new to be learned along the way.
