This practical course aims to give a real understanding of how diesel engines
and their systems actually work so that measures can be taken not only to
prevent mechanical breakdowns but also to identify, diagnose and rectify any
basic faults. This course covers basic engine principles, all the engine
systems, boat electrics plus fault finding, trouble shooting servicing and
winterisation. A demonstration diesel engine is used throughout. No prior
knowledge is needed and all are welcome. Text book required at a cost of approx
£7 payable on enrolment.

exercises and course notes is available for purchase at the beginning of the

Course certificate issues on satisfactory completion of the course. More
advanced course in coastal and offshore (Non Astro) navigation, a follow-on to
the RYA Day Skipper / Watchleader Certificate course. All students should have
either attended that course, or have some knowledge of shorebased or practical
elementary navigation. Subjects taught: chartwork, coastal and offshore
passages, passage planning, pilotage, maritime bouyage system, rule of the road,
regulation, tides, meteorology, electronic aids to navigation. Revision work is
carried out for each subject taught. RYA study packs (charts, exercises and
notes) plus chart navigational instruments available through tutor for purchase
at the start of the course.

miles and 8 night hours.

This is an advanced course for students who have plenty of experience and wish
to gain formal qualifications for leisure or professional purposes. It assumes
an ability above the level for Coastal Skipper. The minimum qualifying
requirements are 50 days at sea, of which 5 days as skipper and have covered at
least 2,500 miles, with 5 passengers greater than 60 miles, of which 2 must be
overnight, and at least 2 of these as skipper. You must hold an SRC Radio
Operators Licence and a recognised First Aid Certificate before the exam may be
ratified. The preparation period is 4 days followed by examination by an RYA
examiner.
